If you wish to record an audio track or perform other audio-related operations, you would need to use some special tools. Soundflower provides an excellent solution for numerous tasks. It enables you to send audio signals from one application to another. Soundflower is not aimed at specific applications, so it gives you many interesting possibilities. What's more, the application is free and open source.

To set up Soundflower on your Mac, you have to follow a wizard's instructions and restart your machine, once the installation process is complete. The application acts as a virtual audio device, which can be set for anything on your Mac. If you wish to send sounds from one application to another, you only need to select Soundflower as the default output device in the source application and as the default input device in the second one. For example, if you want to record an audio track, you have to select Soundflower as your media player's output device and as the input device for a recording application.

In certain applications, changing the sound devices is not possible. Fortunately, Soundflower can be set as the default sound devices for the Mac itself. If you open the System Preferences menu and go to Sound, you will find Soundflower among all other devices. In other words, if you can't select an audio device for your media player or audio recorder, you can still fool these applications, by replacing your Mac's speaker and microphone ports with Soundflower.

Soundflower is not limited to sending sound between two applications. Besides the two-channel virtual audio device, it also provides one with 64 channels, which gives you more possibilities. For example, you can send Skype's audio signal to a recording application and to your speakers at the same time. However, you should know that Soundflower is a global audio space, so audio signals will be mixed if two or more applications send their sound to the same channel.

Pros

You can direct sound between any applications. You can select Soundflower as the default audio device for individual applications or set it as the main sound devices for the Mac itself. Besides two-channel virtual audio device, it also comes with a 64-channel device.

Cons

There are no serious drawbacks to mention. Soundflower gives you a greater flexibility when it comes to directing sound on your Mac.
